Abstract:
The term "sexual harassment" is considered new to Arab culture. In the past it was known as "wooing" in the sense of showing love and approaching the other sex, and it was addressed by Arab cultural books at all levels - poetry, novel and prose. Through global satellites it took a new style that is far away from moral and religious values. The term "sexual harassment" is a common term that took various forms such as verbal harassment, sexual violence in schools, sexual perversion (e.g. tomboys, homosexuals, transsexuals). Women, in particular, suffer from this phenomenon.
Therefore, this explorative study aims at revealing the presence of the phenomenon of sexual harassment among women at work, the extent to which women suffer from it, and identifying the causes of this phenomenon from women's point of view in order to address and reduce it. The tool used in this study, a questionnaire, was administered to 237 Kuwaiti women working at governmental organizations. The data collected was statistically manipulated using statistical software.
The results of the present study show that many women who are exposed to this phenomenon prefer to keep silent. They think that one of the factors which lead colleagues to harass women sexually at work is wearing indecent clothes of all types because they evoke lust in the other party. Another cause is the positive interaction of women with men at work, whether in speech or discussions. This phenomenon varies among the sample by varying percentages. Statistics tend to confirm what they see and hear from colleagues about real sexual harassment situations. The study concludes with some suggestions and recommendations for addressing and reducing sexual harassment against women.
