This study aimed at identifying what competitive research projects are, analysing the role played by these projects in developing the Egyptian university education and its impact on the development of society and identifying the reality of these projects at Fayoum University. It also aimed at identifying the most important obstacles that prevent these projects from achieving their roles efficiently and effectively and the requirements needed to overcome these obstacles. The study followed the descriptive analytical method. The results of the study revealed that the difficulties facing the research projects can be divided into difficulties during applying to the research project (e.g. the most important of which is the weak financial and moral support), difficulties during the implementation of the project, (e.g. the most important of which is the delay of financial expenses) and difficulties impeding the continuity of the project (including difficulties related to the financial aspects, difficulties related to management and difficulties related to the workers). The study results also indicated that there is a large percentage of support for the difficulties faced by researchers, whether difficulties during the preparation, during the implementation or after the completion of the project. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences, at the (0.05) level, between the practical and theoretical colleges on the items of the questionnaire. The study presented a proposed scenario for identifying the requirements needed to overcome the obstacles that prevent competitive research projects from achieving their roles.
