The current research aimed at constructing a program based on supplementary enrichment activities in the Social Studies curriculum for developing sixth grade pupils’ moral thinking skills.
To achieve this goal, skills of moral thinking were determined and the program based on enrichment activities was constructed (including 12 activities distributed along three units). Moreover, the moral thinking scale was prepared. The program was administered to a sample of 45 sixth grade primary stage pupils at Aly Ben Abi Taleb Primary School in the second semester of the academic year 2017/2018. The experimentation took 12 periods to complete.
Based on statistical treatment of data, the research results are summed up as follows:
There was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the research group (of sixth grade pupils) in the pre and post applications of the moral thinking scale in favor of the post-application.
Using the supplementary enrichment activities with the sixth grade pupils in the primary stage Social Studies curriculum proved highly effective (with an ETA square value greater than 0.8) in developing the pupils’ moral thinking skills.
The researcher presented a number of recommendations and implications. For example, it was recommended to use the list of moral thinking skills and the program based on enrichment activities in developing the Social Studies curriculum in the primary stage as well as use the proposed enrichment activities to teach Social Studies. Recommendations also included training teachers on methods of developing moral thinking and designing educational situations that promote pupils’ practice of moral thinking skills.
