This research aimed at developing text analysis and criticism skills for student-teachers specializing in Arabic language at the Faculty of Education, Fayoum University, by using a teaching model based on formalist schools of literature. To achieve this goal, the researchers prepared two lists: one for text analysis skills and the other for literary criticism skills. They also designed two tests, one for analyzing literary texts and another for literary criticism. Additionally, they prepared the teaching model, which includes a student activity book and an instructor's guide. The research adopted both the descriptive-analytical approach for reviewing previous studies, presenting the theoretical framework, preparing research tools, and interpreting and discussing the results, as well as the experimental approach with a quasi-experimental design using one group for conducting the research experiment. The research sample consisted of 33 male and female students. After applying the teaching model to the research group both before and after, a statistically significant difference was found between the pre- and post-test mean scores of the students in both the literary text analysis test and the literary criticism test at 0.01 significance level in favor of the post-test results. This indicates the effectiveness of the proposed teaching model in developing literary text analysis and criticism skills. In the light of the research findings, the researchers recommend developing various teaching models based on modern literary and critical schools and employing them in reading, appreciating, and critiquing literary texts. They also suggest focusing on developing literary criticism skills in light of modern critical trends, which do not emphasize issuing value judgments on literary texts but rather focus on analyzing and reinterpreting texts. Additionally, they recommend reconsidering the course descriptions of literature and criticism at the Faculty of Education to emphasize the practical aspect.
