This study aimed to identify the requirements for developing the role of Qassim and Majmaah universities in supporting healthy cities to meet the World Health Organization’s (WHO onwards) standards. It sought to diagnose the current role of universities in supporting healthy cities and to reveal the main obstacles limiting their development in this aspect. The study adopted a basic qualitative methodology, utilizing documents and interviews as tools. Through the first tool, the researcher conducted a thorough investigation of all WHO guidelines related to the healthy cities program. For the interview tool, the researcher selected a purposive sample consisting of 19 participants from Qassim and Majmaah universities, and the following healthy cities: Unaizah, Jelajel, Al-Bukairiyah, and Al-Zulfi. This was done to diagnose the current reality, uncover obstacles, and determine the requirements for developing the role of universities in supporting healthy cities.
The study reached several findings, most notably the importance of university support for healthy cities. The study also confirmed that the main obstacles hindering the development of the university’s role in supporting healthy cities include weak coordination between the two sides, financial and teaching burdens, in addition to obstacles related to the healthy cities themselves, which include administrative, human, and material challenges. The study also concluded that among the most important requirements for developing the role of Qassim and Majmaah universities in supporting healthy cities is the establishment of a strategy between the Ministries of Education and Health regarding university support for healthy cities.
