This descriptive study, "Assessment of Language Skills in the 'Lughati' Curriculum for Early Grades," was conducted because the researcher recognized the importance of reviewing and evaluating the 'Lughati' curriculum. This recognition stems from the concerning results of early-grade students in reading skills on both local and international assessments.
Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the 'Lughati' curriculum for early grades in light of the four main language skills (writing, reading, speaking, and listening), as well as the sub-skills associated with them, namely, phonological awareness skills at their various levels, reading comprehension skills, and writing activities. The study sought to answer the question: Are the language skills in the 'Lughati' curriculum for early grades sufficient to equip students with the necessary skills to pass standardized assessments successfully?
The study adopted the descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing the research tool of content analysis to examine the 'Lughati' Curriculum for early primary grade students for the academic year 1445 AH. The study reached several findings, most notably the weakness of the 'Lughati' curriculum in presenting reading texts and enriching them with vocabulary and linguistic resources. It also highlighted the limited number of reading comprehension questions following the texts, which primarily focused on lower-order skills (comprehension and recall). Furthermore, the study provided several recommendations, including the necessity of reconstructing and enriching the 'Lughati' curriculum for early grades and adopting effective teaching methods that contribute to the development of reading skills.
