Evaluating the Electronic University Textbook in Light of the Digital Transformation Goals from the Perspective of Faculty Members and Students at Fayoum University

Abstract
The current study aimed to explore the nature of the electronic textbook and the philosophy on which it is based, to identify the theoretical and philosophical framework of digital transformation in higher education, and to investigate the efforts of Fayoum University in moving toward digital transformation. The researchers employed the descriptive method and designed two interview forms to evaluate the adoption of the e-textbook system in light of the digital transformation goals—one targeted at faculty members and the other at students in both theoretical and practical faculties at Fayoum University.
The study reached several findings, the most notable of which are: students encountered various issues when accessing the platform to obtain the e-textbook, including delays in uploading books to the university platform and the requirement to pay fees in order to access them. Moreover, the methods used to implement the e-textbook were often unsuitable for certain academic courses and disciplines. Faculty members pointed out the limited financial return in comparison to the time and effort invested in authoring, designing, and updating textbooks, as well as the absence of effective enforcement of intellectual property laws, which undermines their efforts. In addition, the study highlighted the existence of some unethical practices by a minority of faculty members, such as selling summaries. The study concluded by proposing mechanisms to overcome the challenges faced by both faculty members and students in the adoption of the e-textbook system.
