The current research aims to determine the degree of mastery of foreign students at the Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies in Cairo, Al-Azhar University, of oral language performance skills, and also to determine the relationship between their oral language performance in its two dimensions (listening comprehension and oral expression) and their attitudes towards the Arabic language. This was done using the descriptive analytical approach.
The research presented a list of listening comprehension skills, a list of oral expression skills, and the use of three tools: a listening comprehension test, an oral expression observation card, and a scale of attitudes towards the Arabic language.
The sample consisted of (50) foreign students from the fourth year at the Faculty of Islamic and Arabic Studies in Cairo, Al-Azhar University.
The results indicated that the degree of incoming students’ mastery of oral language performance (listening comprehension skills and oral expression skills) was weak, while their attitudes towards the Arabic language were neutral. A weak relationship was found between listening comprehension and attitudes towards Arabic, while no relationship was found between oral expression and attitudes towards Arabic.
