The study aimed to examine the effectiveness of self-compassion-focused therapy in reducing academic self-critical rumination among under underachieving female university students. The study sample consisted of 14 students with high levels of academic self-critical rumination, with a mean age of 21.071 years and a standard deviation of 1.206. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: an experimental group (n = 7) and a control group (n = 7). The study employed the Academic Self-Critical Rumination Scale (developed by the researcher) and the Self-Compassion-Based Program (developed by the researcher), which consisted of 16 sessions incorporating various techniques and activities. The results indicated the effectiveness of self-compassion- focused therapy in reducing academic self-critical rumination among the study sample, as evidenced by significant differences between the mean rank scores of the experimental group in the pre- and post-measurements, as well as between the post- and follow-up measurements on the Academic Self-Critical Rumination Scale. Furthermore, significant differences were found between the mean rank scores of the experimental and control groups in the post-measurement. The findings were interpreted in light of the study’s theoretical framework and previous research.
