The study aimed to reveal the effectiveness of an educational programme based on green economy in developing the attitudes towards sustainable development and green innovation among tenth grade students in the Sultanate of Oman. The researchers used the quasi-experimental design to achieve study objectives. The sample consisted of two groups, in which one was the experimental group with 66 female students and a control group with 62 female students at Um Saad Al-Ansariyah School, affiliated to the General Directorate of Education in Muscat Governorate.
To answer the research questions of the study, a scale was prepared to measure the attitudes towards sustainable development. It consisted of three dimensions: the environmental, economic, and social dimension. Another scale measured the attitudes towards green innovation that consisted of three dimensions: the green product, green processes, and organizational innovation. They were sent to jury members for validity purposes, then followed by a reliability measure using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient which were 0.765 and 0.794 respectively.
The results revealed statistically significant differences at p (0.05) level in the mean scores between the performance of the experimental group and the control group in attitudes towards sustainable development and in attitudes towards green innovation for the favour of the experimental group in their overall performance. This indicates the effectiveness of the educational programme based on green economy fields to develop the attitudes towards sustainable development and green innovation. In addition, the results revealed a strong positive correlation between the level of attitudes toward sustainable development and the attitudes’ level towards green innovation.
Considering the study findings, further set of recommendations were concluded such as integrating educational units built on green economy fields into the tenth-grade social studies curriculum, and incorporating green innovation tasks and projects, designing classroom activities and school projects explicitly related to local sustainable development issues.
