Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the level of application of the heads of academic departments at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University to the powers granted to them from the point of view of the heads of departments, and the most important obstacles facing them. The study population consisted of all the heads of departments in the faculties of Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University. The sample of the study consisted of (30) heads of department chosen randomly. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher designed a questionnaire consisting of (83) items distributed over two areas: It is divided into four themes (planning, organization, guidance, evaluation and follow-up) and the field of constraints, each of which follows a number of paragraphs that relate to the specific area. The study concluded that the themes of the first area were arranged as follows: planning, direction, implementation, evaluation and review. The study also found that there were statistically significant differences at the level of significance (.050.05) in the degree of exercise of the heads of academic departments at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University for the powers granted to them due to the variable of academic rank and in favor of the rank of professor, while the results did not indicate the existence of differences The statistical significance attributed to the variable of experience. She also pointed to a number of obstacles, the most important of which are: the centrality of decision to the deans of colleges, and the lack of opportunity for the heads of departments in the planning of their departments.
