Types and Functions of Nonverbal Communication Skills of Arabic Teachers for Non-Native Speakers (Case Study)

Abstract

The present study aimed to describe the types and functions of non-verbal communication skills that Arabic language teachers use to non-native speakers in Arabic language classes for scholarship students at the University of Tabuk. By observing the teaching interactions that occur in various educational contexts, and in order to achieve the goal of the study, the case study approach was employed (multiple): where four cases of Arabic language teachers were observed from the faculty members who teach the first and third levels at the Institute of Language Teaching at the University of Tabuk. Designing a suitable observation card for this purpose. MANOVA used to calculate the diversity in the use of non-verbal communication skills, the diversity in the functions of these skills, the diversity in skills and jobs together, and the results of the current study indicate that non-verbal communication for teachers is associated with achieving many important functions in the field of education. Arabic for non-native speakers; As the current study found three categories of non-verbal communication skills that Arabic teachers can use for non-native speakers to achieve five types of jobs that benefit students' learning of the Arabic language. Among the most important of these functions are: improving the deliberative aspects of using the language, compensating for the aspects related to the weakness of the linguistic level, especially among first-level students, in addition to encouraging students to practice language skills, assisting the teacher in classroom management, and achieving some aspects of cultural compatibility among learners. The current study made recommendations related to employing its results in the preparation and professional development of Arabic language teachers for non-native speakers. The study also suggested conducting more studies related to its topic.
