The Training Needs of Teachers of Basic Elementary Schools in the Northern Governorates of Palestine .

Abstract

The current study aimed identifying the training needs of teachers of Basic Elementary Schools in the Northern Governorates of Palestine. To achieve the objectives of the study, a questionnaire is designed consists of 27 items distributed into four domains: Planning and instruction; professional growth; educational technology; and evaluation. After verifying the validity and reliability of the instrument, the designed questionnaire was disseminated among a stratified random sample comprising (154) teachers of both genders. Consequently, the study shows the following results: The training needs for teachers, as a whole, are deemed considerable. In terms of domains, planning and instructionhasthe first place, followed by ​​professional growth, educational technology, respectively. In addition, the evaluation domain stands last. Furthermore, results of the study have demonstrated no statistically differences at the level of significance (∞ = 0.05) in the teachers’ estimates on the training needs, which are hence attributed to the variables of experience, specialization, academic qualification, and the number of training courses attended. Accordingly, and on the grounds of such results, the study recommends the need to train teachers in light of the needs thereof, and reconsider training plans administered by the Palestinian Ministry of Education, so training can contribute in achieving the professional growth for teachers.
