Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to develop a strategic plan for the geography curriculum in the first secondary grade, using SWOT analysis to develop 21st century skills. To achieve this purpose, the descriptive research method was adopted to develop the theoretical framework and tools. These tools consisted of: a list of the 21st century skills, and tools for analyzing the internal and external environment of the curriculum. The sample of the current research were 47. These involved faculty members at the Faculty of Education and Arts specialized in curricula and methods of teaching geography, geography mentors, and teachers at the secondary stage during the academic year 2019 /2020. The results included developing:1) a list of 21st century skills, 2) a curriculum strategic planning model for the enhancing the skills, and 3) Determining the current status of curriculum planning in the light of developing those skills using SWOT analysis. This analysis illustrated that weaknesses outweigh the strengths of the curriculum and this consequently hindered the development of those skills. A set of opportunities and threats were also identified. Based on that, the SWOT Matrix of the curriculum was designed. The research also presents some recommendations, such as: highlighting the need to spread the culture of both developing 21st century skills, using strategic planning, and providing the necessary requirements to ensure its success. It is suggested that further research is needed in the area of strategic planning.
