Abstract

The current study aimed at identifying level of cognitive open-mindedness, and type of Moral self-image, the relationship between cognitive open-mindedness & Moral self-image and the effect of participants’ gender and major of study and the interaction between them on cognitive open-mindedness and moral self-image amongst a group of undergraduate students at Sohag Faculty of Education (N=400) including both males (N=105) and females (N=295), distributed equally between the Arts section (N=200) and the Science Section (N=200). To achieve this objective the researchers adopted the descriptive research design, both correlational and comparative. Data collection was conducted using the Open-minded Cognitive Scale (Price, Ottati, Wilson & Kim, 2015) and the Moral Self-image Scale (Jordan, Leliveld & Tenbrunset, 2015). Results were statistically treated using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, v.20). Findings of the study revealed that the sample of the study enjoyed above average levels of cognitive open-mindedness (W.M= 4.501) as well as slightly better moral self-image than their self-perception of the moral prototype (W.M= 5.658). Findings also revealed a statistically significant correlation (P≤ .05) between participants’ degrees of open-mindedness and their moral self-image. Two-way ANOVA results indicated that there were significant interactions between the participants’ gender and major of study, on the one hand, and their cognitive open-mindedness and moral self-image, on the other hand. Results as well indicated that there was a statistically significant difference ((P≤ =01) between mean scores of the Arts Section students and those of their Science counterparts in their moral self-image, favoring Science Section students. Finally, the results of the simple linear regression analysis revealed that the degree of cognitive open-mindedness can predict moral self-image. Based on these conclusions, a number of recommendations and suggestions for further research were provided.
