The role of university leaders in developing the dimensions of global ‎citizenship among students: Alexandria University as a model

Abstract

The study aims to identify the intellectual and theoretical foundations of global citizenship، identify its most important dimensions، and identify the most important roles played by university leaders in developing the dimensions of global citizenship. In light of the problem of the study، its nature، and the goals it seeks to achieve، the study adopted the descriptive approach and used a questionnaire to reveal the level of university leaders’ practice of their roles in developing the dimensions of global citizenship represented in (human rights، values of world peace، technological empowerment، diversity، acceptance of others، and protection of Environment and critical thinking) at Alexandria University from the students’ point of view.
The study sample was selected from fourth year students (fourth level) in four colleges representing different sectors within the university، namely: the College of Education - representing the educational sciences sector، the College of Arts - representing the humanities sector، the College of Nursing - representing the medical sciences sector، and the College of Agriculture - The applied sciences sector was represented، and the total size of the sample that responded to the questionnaire was (1،199) students.
The study found that the university is developing the dimensions of global citizenship among its students to a high degree, but this is not done in a systematic, institutional manner. Most efforts do not take place under the umbrella of the dimensions of global citizenship, and the dimensions are distributed among the various sectors of the university, and therefore it was necessary to propose a set of necessary recommendations that can be implemented. For university leaders to play their roles in developing the dimensions of global citizenship at Alexandria University in an administrative methodology, including: distributing roles to various university sectors and colleges at Alexandria University, including the Student Affairs Sector, the Youth Welfare Sector affiliated with Education and Student Affairs, and other sectors.
