A proposed educational vision to develop pre-university ‎students’ awareness of Egyptian intangible cultural heritage

Abstract

Intangible cultural heritage is an important part of a people's history and culture, and is the expression of their national identity. Egypt is the land of unique heritage, in all tangible and intangible forms, and Egypt's interest in heritage emerged within the “Egypt Vision 2030,” which emphasized protecting heritage in general, and intangible heritage in particular, and increasing awareness of it in an effort to preserve the Egyptian identity.
Despite the importance of intangible cultural heritage, many forms of this Egyptian heritage, are at risk of disappearing and being forgotten.Within the “Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage” in 2003, UNESCO emphasized enhancing awareness among emerging generations of the importance of this heritage and that education plays an important role in raising awareness of it, respecting it in society, and transmitting it to the following generations.
Therefore, this research aimed to identify the conceptual framework of intangible cultural heritage, the Egyptian intangible cultural heritage, and the experiences of countries in developing the awareness of their students about this heritage. In addition to this, presenting a proposed educational vision to develop pre-university students’ awareness of Egyptian intangible cultural heritage.
