The aim of the study was to explore the perceptions of science and mathematics teachers in the intermediate stage regarding the use of Chat GPT in education in the city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. To achieve this objective, the study employed a descriptive survey method, and the research instrument was a questionnaire consisting of three dimensions: one related to the characteristics and features of Chat GPT, the second focusing on how Chat GPT can be employed in education, and the third addressing the obstacles to its implementation in educational settings. The instrument was administered to a sample of 260 science and mathematics teachers in the intermediate stage in Mecca after ensuring its validity and reliability.
The study utilized appropriate statistical methods to answer the research questions, including frequencies, percentages, T-tests, means, standard deviations, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results indicated that the study participants had a good understanding of employing Chat GPT in education, as the scores were high across all three dimensions: the characteristics and features of Chat GPT, and its application in educational contexts. Additionally, the study found no statistically significant differences at a significance level of 0.05 in the perceptions of science and mathematics teachers regarding the use of Chat GPT based on variables such as gender, specialization, and training courses.
The study recommended enhancing the perceptions of science and mathematics teachers towards the use of Chat GPT in education and encouraging them to translate these perceptions into practical teaching practices. It also suggested incorporating the use of Chat GPT in educational training programs, providing guidance on how teachers can effectively engage with this technology, and implementing these recommendations in teacher preparation programs, training courses, and workshops.
