Abstract

The research problem emerged because of the insufficient environmental literacy and engagement in learning among female secondary school students; considering the curriculum they are taught. The research aimed at identifying the effectiveness of the proposed program based on green education in teaching psychology to develop environmental literacy and engagement in learning among secondary school female students. The research was based on the descriptive and quasi-experimental methods. The research instruments included a list of issues and topics for the proposed green education-based program, a list of environmental literacy dimensions, a list of learning engagement dimensions, a student book for the proposed green education-based program, a teacher's guide for the proposed green education-based program, an environmental literacy test, and a learning engagement scale. The research sample consisted of (59) second-year secondary school female students. The research results indicated the effectiveness of the proposed program based on green education in teaching psychology to develop environmental literacy and engagement in learning among second-year secondary school female students. Also, there is a positive correlation between developing environmental literacy and engagement in learning among second-year secondary school female students that achieves the research primary aim. The research recommended that psychology courses should be redesigned to take into account the lived reality of green education and the attainment of sustainable development goals in light of Egypt's Vision 2030. This would ensure that students are aware of their surroundings. As a result, the lessons students are taught not separate from the aspects of life they encounter and engage with. Moreover, this may help bridge the gap between theory and practice; focusing on recent developments in students' psychological and social contexts and training them on these areas through psychology courses. In addition, it is important to focus on developing environmental literacy and engagement in learning among secondary school students, and to prepare a guide for teachers on how to implement green education principles in classrooms; including psychology courses and other academic courses.
